England is preparing for the friendly with the United States and manager Gareth Southgate already announced the 28-man squad which will also be used for the next game, against Croatia. And there are a couple of surprises as well!
“We know plenty about him,” Southgate said of Wilson, according to The Guardian. “He’s a threat running in behind defences, so this will be a good opportunity to look at him and try to see how he fits into what we are trying to do.”
Callum Wilson completes England’s offensive for the two games, alongside youngster Jadon Sancho, who managed to impress this season in Borussia Dortmund’s shirt, as well as Wayne Rooney, who will play in the Three Lions’ shirt for the last time.
The decision to include the latter managed to create some controversy, but Southgate had an explanation for this, defending his inclusion in the squad.

“There have been ongoing discussions since Wayne retired about paying tribute to him and his England career,” said Southgate. Apparently, Wayne Rooney declined the opportunity to be honored before the World Cup in Russia, in order to not take all the attention from the players going to the tournament.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Dele Alli and Jessi Lingard have also been included in the squad by Gareth Southgate, after missing the most recent games. Here’s England complete squad for the clashes with the United States and Croatia:
- Goalkeepers: Marcus Bettinelli, Jack Butland, Alex McCarthy, Jordan Pickford
- Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell, Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Michael Keane, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker
- Midfielders: Ross Barkley, Dele Alli, Fabian Delph, Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson, Jesse Lingard, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Harry Winks
