Chelsea, ready to offer David Luiz a new contract
During his two stints with Chelsea, David Luiz managed to become one of the West London club’s most important figures, so the fact that no contract extension has yet been agreed with the player came as a surprise for most fans. Still, it appears that the 32-year-old centre-back is ready to pen new terms with the Blues.
Following last night’s 1-1 Europa League draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, Maurizio Sarri talked about the player’s situation, ensuring journalists that Chelsea are making all the moves needed to ensure that the Brazilian won’t leave for free this summer.
“I know that he had a meeting four or five days ago, but then my mind was on this match. I didn’t ask him the result of it. If you want, I will ask him on Friday.”
Earlier this week, Luiz admitted to Sky Sports that he “loves” playing for Chelsea, but also admires the manager’s highly-criticized playing philosophy.
“It’s the way I enjoy football, not just playing but watching. […] Now we control all games and they criticise us because they don’t think we win games with possession. This takes time. We are trying to improve as soon as possible.”
Sure, a lot of fans wouldn’t agree with this, as time is something a manager doesn’t usually have at Chelsea and results are expected as soon as possible.
As for David Luiz’s situation, he’s expected to sign a new contract by the end of the season, as besides being a constant presence in the starting XI, he is also considered a real mentor by the club’s youngsters.
