The young 19 years old Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt justified his recent signing with Juventus. He explained why he decided to declined Barcelona’s offer and what motivated him to play for Juventus.

He admits: “It was a difficult decision. I had several options and you always have to see which one is the best. Many factors play a role. It’s important to know your playing time and how much the club trusts you, which is why Juventus told me they absolutely want me.”

“I like the way the Italians defend and I made a decision based on that. Many of my past models and references are Italian: Baresi, Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro, Scirea… And I could continue,” explains the player in an interview for Ajax TV.

The central defender also wanted to say goodbye to Ajax: “I played here for ten years with the youngsters and three years with the first team. It’s touching to leave this club. I had some good times there, but also some sad ones. I will miss everyone in Amsterdam, but now I have to go further.
