Diego Simeone sees Alvaro Morata vital to his plans
Alvaro Morata moved to Atletico Madrid on a loan this winter and despite his lack of efficiency over the past year at Chelsea, his new manager Diego Simeone believes that the striker knows his ways around the penalty area.
The 48-years old coach is willing to bet that Alvaro Morata will be crucial to Atletico Madrid’s fight for the remaining objectives this season. The striker is set to make his debut for the Europa League winners at Real Betis, on Sunday.
Morata hasn’t quite received a warm welcome from Atletico Madrid’s supporters, as they haven’t forgotten his past at Real. And given his 12 months of misery at Chelsea, we can surely say that the 26-years old forward could really use some luck.
“Morata is an important player for us. We will have four strikers to end the season and he’s compatible with the other three, with Griezmann, Costa and [Nikola] Kalinic. He gives us different possibilities since he’s a finisher striker”, said Diego Simeone on Alvaro Morata, according to Goal.
Atletico’s manager usually plays with Griezmann and another striker, so Morata will have to battle Costa and Kalinic for a starting position. But with the Brazilian-born forward out with some health issues, Alvaro could have the opportunities that he wants.
However, with Atletico Madrid knocked out by Girona in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, Alvaro Morata will have fewer competitions to shine in.
But with Barcelona and Real Madrid paired each other in the Copa del Rey semifinals, Atletico could actually benefit from that double leg duel.
Diego Simeone said that his team doesn’t look at things this way, yet a tired Barcelona or Real Madrid could mean less stress for his players. Including Alvaro Morata, who really doesn’t need to be put under pressure right away.
