Jan Oblak signed a new deal with Atletico Madrid, until 2023
During the January transfer windows, Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak was one of the most sought after goalkeepers in Europe, as a lot of big clubs were after him. Chelsea, who eventually spent a record-fee on Kepa Arizabalaga, also had them on their list, being ready to splash the cash on him, but they decided to look somewhere else.
However, the 26-year-old committed to the club, as he will stay in La Liga until he turns 30, after signing a new contract today.
Ever since joining Atletico in 2014, Oblak managed to keep an impressive 115 clean sheets in 203 games, while adding trophies like the Spanish Super Cup, Europa League, as well as the UEFA Super Cup to his portfolio with the Rojiblancos. As for the current season, he conceded just 21 goals in 32 appearances so far, while maintaining 18 clean sheets.
After inking the new deal, the keeper said that he is “very happy” to pledge his future to the club.
“I will always give my best to defend these colours with everything, I will continue to work hard,” Jan Oblak added.
After securing the future of his goalkeeper, Diego Simeone will start focusing on the future of his main star, Antoine Griezmann, as the rumours about the Frenchman’s possible departure started surfacing again over the past days.
The Argentine appears to be highly preoccupied on keeping his key players in Madrid but also improve the team, in order to become a serious trophy contender next season.
