Rafael van der Vaart predicts an Ajax vs Barcelona UCL final
Even though there are a few games left, there’s no doubt that Ajax Amsterdam is one of this Champions League season’s revelations, after managing to get past Real Madrid and Juventus – both of them considered trophy favourites – and reaching the semi-finals.
However, former Ajax midfielder Rafael van der Vaart is confident that Erik ten Hah’s men are good enough to produce another surprise and reach the final.
“Ajax were much better than Juventus in the second half in Turin,” the Dutchman said for BBC.
“I never thought they could get this far but it is so nice to see everyone scared to play against Ajax. Johan Cruyff is our pride and the best player we’ve ever had, and I’m so happy two of his teams are in the semi-finals. I’m 100% sure they are going to play each other in the final.”
As expected, considering last night’s performance, Rafael van der Vaart took a moment to praise Frenkie de Jong, even though he didn’t appear to be at 100% last night, but still proved that Barcelona made the right decision by signing him earlier this year.
Van der Vaart added that he was impressed by the way Ajax played, like a real team, but also of how the defensive department worked, as goalkeeper Andre Onana didn’t have so much to save.
In the next stage of the competition, the semi-finals, the Dutch side will meet either Tottenham Hotspur or Manchester City, while Barcelona will most likely face Liverpool, considering Jurgen Klopp’s side 2-0 advantage over Porto, after the first leg of the quarter-finals.
